Measured 2026-08-27: this gate caught 0 of 6 invisible-character test cases. It has never detected an NBSP, zero-width space, BOM, soft hyphen, bidi override or word joiner.

Root cause

The pattern used UTF-8 byte sequences (\xc2\xa0) while grep -P matches characters. Bytes c2 a0 are one character U+00A0; \xc2\xa0 asks for two, U+00C2 then U+00A0 — never present.

grep -P '\xc2\xa0'  ->  miss
grep -P '\x{a0}'    ->  MATCH

Only \x00 worked, being single-byte in both readings. The gate ran, passed, and could not see what it exists to see.

Fixed

  • codepoint escapes in place of byte sequences
  • C0 controls \x01-\x08,\x0B,\x0C,\x0E-\x1F added (TAB/LF/CR excluded)
  • grep -a — without it grep skips any NUL-bearing file as binary

The C0 range matters: a stray backspace byte made a workflow unparseable in developer-ecosystem, so it never ran — and this linter called it clean.

Canonical fix: hyperpolymath/empty-linter#70. 1 file(s) here.

Verified: YAML re-parsed, and the corrected pattern was confirmed to catch a real NBSP before the change was kept.

📝 Walkthrough

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved automated detection of invisible and formatting characters.
    • Added coverage for control characters, null bytes, zero-width characters, directional marks, non-breaking spaces and byte-order marks.
    • Binary files are now handled consistently during scanning.
    • Checks now block corrupted files containing control characters or null bytes, while other invisible-character findings remain advisory.

Walkthrough

The empty-lint workflow now detects invisible characters with Unicode codepoint escapes, scans binary files as text, and fails when files contain C0 control characters or NUL bytes.

Changes

Invisible-character gate

Layer / File(s) Summary
Pattern and scan update
.github/workflows/dogfood-gate.yml
The PATTERNS regex now uses Unicode codepoint escapes and includes control and directional formatting characters. The grep scan now uses -aPrl to process binary files as text.
Blocking finding enforcement
.github/workflows/dogfood-gate.yml
The workflow counts files with C0 control characters or NUL bytes, emits ::error annotations, and fails the job when the count is above zero. Other invisible Unicode findings produce ::notice annotations.

Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~10 minutes

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 79042

The workflow now detects Unicode code points, C0 controls, and NUL-bearing files, but scan errors may still be treated as clean, leading BOMs may be missed, and Unicode matching depends on the runner locale. Merge should wait for these bounded gate-correctness issues to be fixed or explicitly accepted.

Poem

A rabbit scans each hidden byte
Unicode marks come into sight
Binary files join the queue
C0 controls trigger too
The gate reports and guards the night

GNU grep -P PCRE2 \x{200b} character code point value in \x{} or \o{} is too large UTF mode documentation

💡 Result:

The error "character value in \x{} or \o{} is too large" in GNU grep when using PCRE2 (the -P option) occurs primarily because PCRE2 is not operating in UTF-8 mode [1]. In PCRE2, escape sequences like \x{200b} are valid only when the engine is explicitly set to recognize multi-byte characters [2][3]. By default, PCRE2 may treat the regex as a sequence of single-byte characters, making a code point value like 0x200B (which is far greater than 255) invalid [2][1]. To resolve this issue: 1. Enable UTF-8 Mode: Ensure you are using the -P option along with an indicator that triggers UTF-8 mode. In many environments, adding the u modifier (often within the regex string if supported, e.g., (?u)) or ensuring your locale is set to a UTF-8 encoding (e.g., LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8) is required [4][1]. 2. Correct Syntax: Verify there are no typos in the sequence. For example, using \x{2000-} (with a trailing hyphen) inside a character class is a common mistake that can trigger parsing errors; ensure ranges are properly formed, such as [\x{2000}-\x{200A}] [1]. 3. PCRE2 Interpretation: Be aware that \x{...} is the standard syntax for specifying Unicode code points in PCRE2 [4][2]. If your environment is compiled with specific alternate options (like PCRE2_ALT_BSUX), the handling of these escapes may change, though this is rare in standard GNU grep implementations [2][5][3]. If you continue to see the error, verify that your grep version supports -P and that your system's locale settings are correctly configured for UTF-8 [4]. Testing with a simple pattern like grep -P '\x{200B}' in a UTF-8 locale is a standard way to confirm the engine is interpreting the escape sequence as a Unicode code point rather than a literal string [4].

Add a separate leading-BOM check.

The result file depends only on grep -aPrl "$PATTERNS". The \x{feff} alternative is not a raw-byte check for EF BB BF at byte 0. Add that check and merge its output with /tmp/empty-lint-results.txt.

In @.github/workflows/dogfood-gate.yml at line 123, Add a separate check for the
UTF-8 BOM byte sequence EF BB BF specifically at the start of each result file,
then merge the matching filenames into /tmp/empty-lint-results.txt alongside the
existing grep -aPrl "$PATTERNS" output. Keep the current PATTERNS scan unchanged
for other characters.

Second layer of the empty-linter fix, scoped by an owner ruling after a census.

DETECTION (layer 1, earlier commit on this branch) sees everything the
pattern covers. ENFORCEMENT (this commit) distinguishes two classes:

BLOCKING C0 control characters and NUL. Never legitimate; proven damage -
a backspace byte made a workflow unloadable (it never ran once),
and LaTeX maths in wiki files was silently mangled where a
generation step turned backslash-b commands into backspaces.
ADVISORY NBSP, BOM, zero-width marks. A gate-lens census found ~2,100
            first-party files carry these as legitimate typography in prose;
blocking would fail 2,333 files estate-wide for no safety gain.

Enforcement lives INSIDE the scan step: if the scanner crashes, the step
fails the job directly, so empty counts can never drift into a separate
check that passes silently (review finding). The blocking count re-greps
only the files the full pattern already flagged, so the find expression is
not duplicated and cannot drift.

Fail closed on scan errors.

The find -exec grep ... \; command can return 0 even when a per-file grep returns 2. The blocking if grep -qaP ... also treats status 2 as a non-match. An incomplete scan can therefore pass the gate. Capture scan errors and exit non-zero when either scan reports an error.

Pin or verify the UTF-8 locale.

Both grep -aPrl and grep -qaP use \x{...} Unicode escapes. GNU grep uses LC_CTYPE when interpreting these patterns. Ubuntu runners normally use C.UTF-8, but the workflow does not enforce or check this requirement. Set LC_ALL=C.UTF-8 for both scans, or verify the effective locale.

123-134: Add the separate leading-BOM check.

The result list still depends only on grep -aPrl "$PATTERNS". A UTF-8 BOM at byte 0 can be missed, so the file never reaches either enforcement loop. Check EF BB BF at offset 0 separately, merge the path into /tmp/empty-lint-results.txt, and deduplicate the list.

123-123: 🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration

No in-repository pattern copies require alignment. The repository contains one PATTERNS= definition and no legacy byte-sequence copies.
